What is Hippotherapy?
Hippotherapy is the use of equine movement as part of an integrative occupational therapy treatment plan. Research has shown that horses move in patterns similar to typical human walking and can impart a powerful sensorimotor experience to the client to affect their balance, strength, sensory regulation, visual and vestibular flow and flexibility. This high quality, rhythmic movement can help with emotional and cognitive issues to decrease anxiety and improve focus, attention and memory. A wide variety of people and diagnoses may benefit from the use of a comprehensive treatment plan including hippotherapy.
Our TherapistKaren Gardner has a master’s degree in occupational therapy and has extensive post-graduate training in specialties such as hippotherapy, neurodevelopmental treatment, sensory integration and processing skill building, behavior management and adaptive behavior treatments. Karen has over 20 years of experience working in hospitals, outpatient clinics and centers providing hippotherapy. She is a faculty member for the American Hippotherapy Association to teach other therapists about hippotherapy and is an adjunct professor in the OT department at Lone Star College. Karen’s philosophy about therapy is that improving function, learning new skills and building relationships can be done in a friendly, supportive and fun environment.
